Modewarre coach Chris Hickey said his side’s ability to regain its composure after a frantic start to its encounter with Ocean Grove helped in securing a tough win.

The Warriors trailed at quarter time, but they were able to keep the Grubbers to three behinds in the second quarter before running away with a 8.10 (58) to 6.8 (44) victory.

Modewarre held a 32-point lead halfway through the final term, but Ocean Grove kicked the final three goals of the game to fall 14 points short of victory.

Hickey said the squad refocused at quarter time, which helped Modewarre secure the victory.

“They outnumbered us at the contest in the first quarter,” he said.

“Our ability to have a bit more composure, and the way we set up was a lot better in quarters two and three, and that was a facet in how we were able to break away from them a bit.

“After quarter time we were a lot better at getting more numbers to the contest and then using it well, Ocean Grove were really dominant at that at the early stages.

“It was pleasing to know we were able to make those changes on the fly and it worked for us, because we’ll have to do that over the next few weeks against other good sides.”

Outgoing Ocean Grove coach Pete Davey said he thought his squad were “really brave”.

“I asked our boys to keep putting their heads over the footy and keep getting territory, which they did,” he said.

“We deserved to be closer than we were halfway through that last quarter, we were down by 32 points at one stage.

“We then got a bit of a roll on and moved the ball cleanly and directly and get some reward for our effort but you don’t get any points for being brave.”

Anglesea v Drysdale

A five-goal-to-one final quarter was the difference between the Drysdale and Anglesea, with the Hawks securing a 13.13 (91) to 7.9 (51) victory.

Co-coach Tom Ruggles kicked three goals for the Hawks and was their player on the day, while Anglesea’s Dylan Pettingill also slotted three.

James Breust and Ben Fennell also kicked two goals each for the Hawks, who sit second on the ladder on percentage.

Barwon Heads v Geelong Amateur

Geelong Amateur was hapless to the power of Barwon Heads in the second half of their clash, with the Seagulls piling on 16 goals to two in the second half to run out 22.10 (142) to 7.5 (47) victors.

Captain Mitch Herbison led the way for the Seagulls with six goals, while Sammy Baker had five, Shaun Lyle with three and Lachie Wilson and Oliver Wiltshire with two majors each for Barwon Heads.

Barwon Heads’ second half was the fourth time the Seagulls had scored more than 100 points in a half of football this season.

Queenscliff v Portarlington

Queenscliff kept in touch with the top five after a dominant performance against Portarlington.

The Coutas had eight goal kickers, with six multiple, in the 18.17 (125) to 5.6 (36) victory at home.

Jordy McIvor-Clark booted five and was one of Queenscliff’s best players, while Lachie Kidd was dominant for the Coutas all day.

Queenscliff is two points behind Geelong Amateur on the ladder with just two rounds left in the season.

Newcomb v Torquay

Torquay will hold onto the top spot on the ladder for another week after beating Newcomb 15.18 (108) to 6.7 (43).

Callum Currie kicked five goals and has moved to 41 goals for the year in a dominant display of forward craft, while Chase Loftus was one of the Tigers’ best players on the day.

Newcomb had six players kick goals, with no one managing to slot multiple majors against one of the league’s premiership favourites.
