Carlton star forward Charlie Curnow said he was pushing for a family reunion in navy blue after the inaugural ‘De Koning Cup’ was played in round 18.
The AFL’s leading goal kicker was back at his hometown of Torquay for a junior football clinic on Thursday after Carlton’s 30-point loss to ladder-leader’s Geelong.
Curnow said he would put the hard word on teammate Tom De Koning about luring his brother and rising Cats defender Sam De Koning across to Carlton.
“It’s funny because we’ve spent a bit of time together on the Gold Coast in the hub,” he said.
“Me, Tommy and Sam surfed a few times with Ed (Curnow) and a few of the other boys, so we’ve spent a bit of time with each other.
“If he wants to get traded to Carlton I’m sure we’d take him any time.
“It’d be good to get him with his brother, we’ll get Tommy onto it so we can set him up and get him across to the Blues.”
Curnow kicked two first-quarter goals on the way to three for the match against the Cats, but his partner-in-crime and 2021’s Coleman Medalist Harry McKay was kept goalless in the loss.
De Koning spent time playing as Curnow’s direct opponent, but the Rising Star nominee was mainly stationed on McKay and showed his class against another one of the competition’s elite targets forward of the ball.
Curnow said De Koning had the traits to be one of the competition’s elite key defenders, and was already showing glimpses of his uncapped potential.
“I had never actually played on him before, but he’s a really great talent,” he said.
“To be 200cm and to be able to move like that is pretty incredible, he’s really clean when the ball is at ground level, he reads the play really well and he is always pretty composed.
“He’d look pretty good in navy I reckon.”
