Alex Fevola is set to celebrate her first Mother’s Day as a mum to four gorgeous girls, and she couldn’t recommend having another baby later in life more highly.

She admits it was a “wonderful surprise” when she discovered last May that she was pregnant with her fourth daughter Tobi to former AFL star turned top-rating radio personality Brendan. Oldest daughter Mia is 19, followed by Leni, 12 and Lulu, 9.

“She was obviously a wonderful surprise but I could not ever have imagined how much happiness she would bring. She is just a joy. We’re all obsessed, we literally can’t believe it, all of us. We all fight over her,” Fevola says.

“I was actually worried, being older. Was I going to be able to cope? But it’s just been so much easier because I’ve got the help (from Brendan and the older girls) and she’s such a good baby.

Fevola, 42, says she is appreciating all of the phases of having a newborn, particularly because of the significant age difference between Tobi and her sisters.

“I think you appreciate it more. I think with the other girls, when you’re younger and you’ve got a lot more happening and you’ve got other kids taking your attention, you can’t appreciate those moments as much,” she says.

“When you’ve got other little kids they don’t enjoy each other in the same way, they play together but this is a different relationship. Just seeing the rest of the family with her, they all adore her because they’re all old enough to enjoy her as well. It’s very special having a baby later.”

Fevola says initial fears over how she was going to juggle a new addition along with her growing Runway Room business were quickly allayed.

“It is probably the busiest we’ve ever been, we’ve had the biggest growth spurt in the entirety of the business life span and when I fell pregnant, I thought ‘Oh god’, because I knew what we had planned. I did think, ‘How am I going to do this?’,” she says.

“Nothing can really prepare you for the challenges that having your first child can bring, but I honestly feel this is the easiest because I’ve got so many helpers.”

“I’ve got Brendan and Mia if I have to go into the office but mainly its phone calls and emails which I can do from my office here (at home). I feel really lucky, I can do it. I can still run my business and be a mum and I feel I really haven’t jeopardised her with this.”

The Fevola’s have endured a well-documented, at times tumultuous relationship, but they count their blessings every day that they have found a new happiness and fulfilment reunited as a family.

“Everything is slower now, we spend a lot of time at home with the kids. We don’t do anything, we are so boring now. It is both a conscious decision and a natural evolution of getting older, you just would rather be with your family than out partying. We’ve been there done that and it’s also just exhausting, who wants to get up to a baby when you’ve been out all night?,” Fevola says.

Brendan proposed to ex-wife Alex in 2016 and while they have plans to marry again, they’re in no rush.

“To plan a wedding, I can’t even think of anything more time consuming than wedding planning on top of everything else we’ve got going on. So I just keep thinking when things quieten down we will look at it,” Fevola says.

“The kids are keen. We were talking about it recently and the kids were like, ‘When are you going to get married?’ They would love to do it and it would be so cute with Tobi involved, but it’s just time.”

“I don’t think we’d do the whole big thing, we had a really big wedding the first time so we’ve been there, done that. I think it will be more low key, something quiet and nice.”
