THE AFL has joined with other major sporting codes to fight against proposed new restrictions on television gambling advertising.

It is understood the federal government will next week consider new laws banning ads for betting agencies during live sporting events. Cabinet is expected to consider a proposal that likely goes further than current restrictions on live odds during matches.

The Herald Sun has been told the proposal would affect all betting advertising from the start to the finish of games.

But sporting groups — led by the AFL — are warning the laws would slash the value of the TV rights their codes attract and massive losses of money from product fees.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan and the National Rugby League administrator Nick Weeks met with Communications Minister Mitch Fifield in Melbourne last week.

Sporting groups, including Cricket Australia, are also warning the changes would risk the integrity agreements struck with betting agencies, where sporting officials can monitor any gambling by players, coaches and staff.

It is understood the move has been driven by Treasurer Scott Morrison and has the strong support of Social Services Minister Christian Porter.

Responsible Wagering Australia — a lobby group for online bookies headed by former Labor senator Stephen Conroy — has already signalled the industry is willing to drastically wind back its advertising.

The group has advocated for less gambling advertising on TV, a national self-exclusion register and no inducements for new members.
