THE Turnbull Government has dumped a group of Administrative Appeals Tribunal members after the tribunal made a series of controversial decisions to protect criminals from deportation.
The Herald Sun can reveal that Attorney-General George Brandis will today announce a new president of the tribunal, as well as more than 60 new appointments, after the government decided to let go of several members whose terms expire this Friday.
Some of the members who have been axed were in the migration and refugee division, including Miriam Holmes, who the Herald Sun revealed had saved sex creep taxi driver Jagdeep Singh from deportation and had another of her decisions removed from a public website.
Senator Brandis said Justice David Thomas, a member of the Queensland Supreme Court, would be the new president of the AAT.
“Justice Thomas’ experience and qualifications make him the right person to lead Australia’s merits review tribunal. His appointment is for seven years,” Senator Brandis said.
He also revealed a long list of new appointments and reappointments whose terms will also run for seven years.
“These appointees are highly qualified to undertake the important task of conducting merits review of government decisions,” Senator Brandis said.
“A majority of the appointees are existing members of the Tribunal.”
