A pedestrian has died after they were hit by a car before being thrown into the path of another vehicle.

A pedestrian has died after they were hit by one car and thrown into the path of another, with motorists urged to avoid the area.

An investigation has been launched after a fatal collision in Melbourne on Friday morning.

Emergency services were called after reports a pedestrian had been hit by a car before being thrown into the path of another on Victoria Rd just north of the Maroondah Highway in Lilydale about 6.35am.

The pedestrian, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The drivers weren’t injured in the incident and are speaking with investigators.

Commuters have been told to avoid the area as roads are expected to be closed for several hours.

Police have urged anyone with footage or information to come forward.

It comes as 179 lives have been lost on Victorian roads this year, surpassing the 176 lives that were lost on roads this time last year.

Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir previously said 2023 was a “catastrophic year” for Victorian roads, with 296 deaths recorded.

“If we keep continuing this trend that we’ve seen recently, we will exceed last year’s last 296, which was the worst in 15 years,” Mr Weir said at a press conference on August 10.

“We can’t accept that. Between now and the end of the year we’ll be absolutely working as hard as we can to keep that as low as possible, but this is a team effort.

“We need everyone to be on-board to help us otherwise more families are going to suffer the terrible trauma that a number of families have suffered in the last week or so.”
