A bus driver has used a fire extinguisher to break up an assault that left a man seriously injured outside a shopping centre.

Police say a 19-year-old man was sitting at a Melbourne bus stop outside a shopping centre in Rowville when he was approached by two people about 9.30pm on Thursday.

The pair were believed to be armed with a baton and a knife.

Police say they then assaulted the 19-year-old, with a bus driver who was stopped nearby using a fire extinguisher to intervene.

The driver reportedly held the extinguisher towards the offenders who then fled the scene.

The 19-year-old was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

He was not co-operative with police.

The offenders were driving a silver BMW, with an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident under way.

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
