I never start my daily dressing routine by selecting jewellery first but, if it means I will look as chic as Margot McKinney OAM, I’m willing to change!
Referencing Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy as style icons, it’s no surprise Margot’s wardrobe is comprised of Valentino cocktail gowns, an extensive collection of Roger Vivier shoes and a strand of Australian south sea pearls. With a penchant for 60s silhouettes and Uniqlo basics, this is a wardrobe to raid when the invitation requires “timeless glamour”.
How would you describe your personal style?
When I think about what I am going to wear each day I always think of the jewellery first. The rest always falls into place from there.
Who are your style icons?
Jackie Kennedy, Princess Diana, Audrey Hepburn … and my mother.
What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe?
A treasured overcoat knitted by my mother when I was very young. I fondly recall my mother wearing it in the cold Toowoomba winters when growing up.
What are your favourite brands?
I really miss Easton Pearson for the design and creativity in their extraordinary pieces. I appreciate many brands for their style and tailoring and am an eclectic shopper. I often mix different designers in one look but always start with my jewellery.
I have a couple of beautifully tailored Gucci and Dolce and Gabbana dresses and a Valentino cocktail dress my husband (Peter Kedwell) bought me years ago and they are all as fabulous as they were the day I brought them home.
That is the thing with buying quality, it transcends fashion and lasts a lifetime. It is the same with fine jewellery, it becomes a family treasure.
What’s the most you have spent on an outfit?
About 25 years ago I was in Melbourne and fell in love with a pair of Sergio Rossi black boots that were “eye wateringly” expensive. Upon seeking my mother’s advice I purchased them and have worn them every year since. In hindsight they were worth every dollar. Buying the best always is the right decision.
What is the most surprising thing in your wardrobe?
I have almost every colour of shoe that Roger Vivier has ever made.
Top wardrobe must haves?
Roger Vivier silver mid heel. Good black pant, crisp white blouse and most of all a strand of Australian south sea pearls and fabulous earrings.
What is the most sentimental item in your wardrobe?
The beautiful Alla Moda skirt my mother wore to my wedding.
Summer or winter fashion?
I love both. I love seasons and towards the end of winter dream of the freedom of a flowing kaftan at the beach and I equally long for layers and coats towards the end of our long summer.
How many pairs of shoes do you own?
Hmmm!
Best designer fashion purchase this year?
Carla Zampatti pale blue pants and jacket – it is perfect with south sea pearls.
Best bargain fashion purchase this year?
Black and white Uniqlo Ts.
