‘I sold it after’: Fashion designer reveals secret to designer wardrobe

Want to know the secret to being able to afford expensive fashion labels? This fashion designer has a top tip.

Inside My Wardrobe with Lucy Henry-Hicks

Owner of Dissh, 34, Palm Beach

When it comes to understated style, Dissh owner Lucy Henry-Hicks hits the fashion mark where oversized blazers, designer accessories and denim ensure she is always looking chic.

As a new Mum and on-the-go business owner, Lucy relies on tailoring and neutral tones to form the basis of her outfits where a clever mix of high-street fashions and luxe adornments create a unique and signature style.

Citing Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Moss as fashion muses, it’s little wonder both Lucy’s closet and latest Dissh offerings are highly sought after!

How would you describe your personal style?

Clean, simple, sophisticated yet effortless. I wear mostly neutrals favouring black a lot. Rarely any colour or print. If I do a print, it’s a minimal print only like a stripe or small geo. I tend to gravitate towards textures and interesting fabrics, in classic shapes. I look to European designers and influencers as my style icons.

Who are your style icons?

Eek – so many. My IG feed is full of stylish women from all around the world. I do jump around – there isn’t one person I follow religiously. At the moment, I’m having a real 90s revival moment so I’m loving everything Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Moss wore in that period.

What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe?

I actually don’t have many old things anymore. I’m really into cycling these days – as something new comes in, something old needs to go. I donate or sell most of my old clothes. I’m at a stage where I can’t deal with clutter, I want to go into my wardrobe and everything to have its place and is organised.

What are your favourite brands?

At the designer end; Gucci, Fendi, Bottega. I love Australian designers – I think we have some of the best fashion in the world. I love international brands such as Staud, jacquemus, The Row, Vic Beckham, Acne. I wear a lot of DISSH (obviously) and still do the old Zara haul every now and again.

Have you ever made a style faux pas?

Absolutely, hasn’t everyone! I find if you ever dress really “on trend” for an event or a picture moment, you always regret it. Obviously trends change, but a picture lasts forever.

What’s the most you have spent on an outfit?

Maybe $2000 – I sold it after!

What is the most surprising thing in (or about) your wardrobe?

I really like to mix high and mid fashion. A mid fashion dress or pants and top with designer, shoes, bags and jackets or sunglasses. Clothing trends change quickly so I like to save money here but invest in designer accessories which last longer and put the finishes touches on an outfit.

Top three wardrobe must haves?

A oversized blazer, oversized cotton shirt, a pair of designer sunglasses.

What is the most sentimental item in your wardrobe?

My wedding suit. I don’t hold onto many things but I think I’ll hold onto this. Special memories! I brought a Scanlan and theodore suit off the rack 4 days before and that was my wedding look done. It was in the middle of Covid and we had postponed so many times and one day, we were like, its time – let’s just do this and organised everything in a week.

What would you buy if money was no object?

A vintage Cartier watch – obsessed!

Summer or Winter Fashion?

Summer – we’re obviously a summer first brand so summer is what I know and love. Living in Qld, it’s summer all year around so you become very familiar with how to style a good summer/resort outfit.

Denim or Dresses?

Denim

Heels or sneakers?

Heels all day long. I appreciate a good sneaker look but it doesn’t work for these short legs unfortunately.

Is there anything in your wardrobe you have regretted throwing out?

No not really – I’m not one to attach sentimental value to any particular item – I’m usually an “out with the old, in with the new” kinda girl.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

Haha a few. Thing is my guilty pleasure. Shoes and bags.

Favourite fashion era (i.e. 60s, 70s, 80s)?

80s – I love a good power suit!

Best Designer fashion purchase this year?

A pair of Fendi slides – I was pregnant most of this year and they literally saved my life. Comfort meets style – that never happens but when it does it’s magic.

Best bargain fashion purchase this year?

And oversized men’s blazer from an up cycle shop.

Three beauty products you can’t live without.

The whole Rationale Range – hello at home facial. NARS concealer and lash extensions.
