The Great Escape Travel Survey: Over 1 in 3 Aussies pack Vegemite when they travel

Forget family and friends: 1 in 3 Aussies struggle to leave their favourite mineral-spread behind when they go overseas...

Parisians can keep their croissants, the Spanish can have their oily morning toast; the Polish can enjoy their constitutional vodka and ciggie; Americans can keep smashing those donuts.

Why? Aussies may have a hunger for seeing the world, but we'd like to do so after a familiar start to our day: by munching on Vegemite on toast.

That's what The Great Escape Travel survey found, anyway, with one in three Australians admitting to taking Vegemite with them on an overseas trip.

The survey, which picked the brains of 5199 Aussie travellers, found that seven per cent of Aussies "always" take Vegemite with them, to get their fix, while 27 per cent said: "yes, I have taken it with me before."

On the other side of the coin, 14 per cent of respondents said they didn't like Vegemite, and 53 per cent of respondents said "no, I want to try other foods instead." 

Males are also likelier to say "no, I want to try other foods instead," with 57 per cent of men admitting that in the survey.

In other food-related findings, two-in-five Aussies are fine with drinking alcohol before 10am - as long as you're in an airport, with 38 per cent of respondents saying "yes, it's always cocktail hour somewhere."

This isn't the only bizarre Aussie eating habit that leaves other countries confused. We have plenty of quirks which astound and amaze non-Aussies, from our pub culture to our penchant for calling chips "fries" and crisps "chips."
