It’s often said that socks and jocks are against the rules when finding a Christmas gift for dad.
But these days they can add some style and excitement to his wardrobe, according to Callum Smith, Kmart’s chief merchandise officer.
“Every dad can use undies and socks, and novelty styles add a bit of fun to the mundane,” Smith says. “You also know with this gift that it’s something they actually need.”
Smith says books written by dad’s favourite stars are also a great, no-fuss gift for him to enjoy over the holiday break.
Meanwhile, Bunnings’ director of merchandise, Jen Tucker, expects power tools, hand tool sets and smart home tech to be popular, along with barbecues, smokers and lawnmowers.
“Our recent research has told us that 60 per cent of Aussies value practicality in a gift, with almost 80 per cent of male respondents noting a practical gift preference,” Tucker says.
“Gift cards continue to be a favoured gifting option, with one in three customers noting a gift card as their ideal Christmas gift this year.”
Dad of three Joseph Du Rieu, from Brighton East in Melbourne, is hoping for socks, books and cooking gear under the tree.
“I am getting into reading again so I would love a good book for the holidays,” he says.
“We haven’t had enough time to spend with family over the past couple of years so a barbecue set to use while baking the Christmas ham would be well deserved.”
