A Melbourne shopper has spotted a huge “difference” between Aldi and Woolworths trolleys – and the photo proves one is better than the other.

A photo showing the difference between the trolleys at two rival Australian supermarkets has got shoppers talking.

The image shows a row of Aldi trolleys neatly in a line at a Melbourne shopping centre car park – while Woolworths carts can be seen in complete disarray.

If you’re scratching your head to figure out why there’s such a huge difference in the way shoppers return each store’s trolleys, it’s all down to the fact Woolies carts are free while Aldi requires a gold coin deposit system.

“The difference $1 can make,” the snap was captioned in a post shared on Reddit.

The Reddit post attracted thousands of responses from horrified Australians who were shocked at the state of the Woolies trolleys.

“Who doesn’t get a buzz from putting a trolley back properly? Especially if there are a few that aren’t lined up and you manage to get them to all slot in nicely,” one user commented.

“The trolley problem would be solved if people going to the store would return trolleys on their way,” another remarked.

Meanwhile one user had no time for those who ditch their trolley in a random place: “Seriously though put your trolley back.”

Others weren’t convinced the trolleys were in a shocking state purely because of the coin system, claiming Woolworths has two different sizes that don’t slot together.

“I suspect it’s more to do with multiple trolley designs which aren’t mutually compatible,” one wrote.

“I’ve found myself sorting out trolleys into correct bays at my Coles on the odd occasion … I mean really, who puts the shallow trolleys in with the deep ones, we live in a society people,” another raged.

“The Woolies trolleys there are always super annoying. The problem is there are two types of trolleys and as soon as someone gets lazy and puts one on the wrong side that’s it, all hope is lost,” someone else ranted.

Aldi recently introduced smaller trolleys in stores across the country after shoppers’ feedback claimed the larger size was too big to navigate.

Shoppers had previously complained about the “enormous” 212-litre trolleys, stating they’re unpractical for “short people”, the elderly and those who just want to grab a handful of things.

“We recognise that customers are looking for greater convenience when they visit our stores, as it’s almost impossible not to pick up the excellent value products on offer,” an Aldi spokesperson told news.com.au in June.

“That’s why we’re introducing smaller trolleys across all our locations, so our customers can more efficiently pick up products while doing smaller grocery shops.”

Shoppers later took to Facebook to share their excitement over the new addition, with many saying, “It’s about time.”
