Victoria’s snowfields get a dumping of the white stuff in time for school holidays

HEADING to the snow these school holidays? There’s been a dumping of snow overnight and there’s more to come.

2016/17: Australia's year of wild weather

VICTORIA’S snowfields have had a dumping of the white stuff — just in time for the school holidays.

Mt Buller says they’ve had 12cm of new snow in the past 24 hours and the village is looking white again.

Falls Creek says snowfall over the past week means snow depths are “awesome” with natural snow at 22cm and snow-making sits at 73cm on open terrain.

Mt Hotham says snow will be much firmer today than the last couple of days but there should be a skim of dry fresh and machine made snow on the runs to make for good carving.

Mount Donna Buang is yet to see any snow, but hopes to see 3cm by Sunday.

In Melbourne, the Bureau of Meteorology predicts a mostly sunny day with a top of 14C — with a possible late shower.

Conditions are expected to stay the same into th weekend, with the mercury not expected to go over 14C until Monday — with a top of 15C.

Enjoy the warmer weather while you can though, it’s going to be a cold week — with a top of 12C and 13C tipped for Tuesday and Wednesday.

And the cold nights will return with a minimum of 3C expected on Tuesday night.

In it’s seasonal outlook, the BOM says while nights are likely to be warmer on average between July and September — very cold nights are expected too.

This is because of high pressure and clear skies.
