Spring snow falls across Victoria

UPDATE: MELBOURNE has been battered with a sudden soaking of spring rain, with a torrential shower giving commuters a taste of the wet weekend to come.

About 7.2mm of rain has fallen since 9am, but don’t put the umbrella away just yet — the cluster is travelling east and more rain is forecast for the remainder of the evening.

Footy fans attending the Cats vs. Swans clash at the MCG tonight should prepare for a scrappy battle, with the highest probability of rainfall predicted immediately after the match.

For those continuing the festivities into the early morning, the rain will ease while the mercury drops to a chilly 10C.

Flood watch warnings are in place for west and South Gippsland and the greater Melbourne catchments.

More snow has fallen overnight in the alpine region with 6cm at Falls Creek, 7cm at Mt Buller and 9cm at Mt Hotham.

Senior forecaster Chris Godfred said it’s been an unusually snowy start to September with the Macedon, Otway and Dandenong Ranges all expected to be sprinkled white again overnight and early tomorrow morning.

“Having this number of snowfalls in September is not something that happens very often,” he said.

“It’s definitely been a colder than average start to spring, but next week we will pick up some milder weather with Thursday shaping up to be a good day.”
