FOOD truck fare doesn’t get as good as fried chicken or burgers. But this tasty creation by Melbourne pastry chef Christy Tania, which combines the two, isn’t what it appears.

THIS HAMBURGER is not as it seems.
What appears to be a crunchy fried chicken burger oozing with barbecue sauce and cheese is kooky creation by Melbourne dessert queen Christy Tania.

The savoury looking snacks are one of two dessert burgers being sold in a pop-up yellow submarine by Ms Tania’s ice cream business Glace this weekend.
The first, named after Patty Bouvier from The Simpsons, is a deep fried salted caramel ice cream, with melted marshmallow (for cheese), chocolate sauce and a honeycomb crunch on a brioche bun.
Patty’s twin sister Selma Bouvier, is a strawberry shortcake deep fried ice cream, with strawberry compote, melted marshmallow and sliced strawberries (for tomatoes) in a brioche bun.
Ms Tania said her creation was inspired by her mother’s quirkiness in the kitchen.
“My mum was one of the quirkiest mum’s in the universe and would make me ice cream sandwiches for breakfast on white bread,” she said.
“It was amazing, so I thought I could play off that idea.”
Ms Tania, who rose to fame through her MasterChef Australia appearances, wanted to create something different in a street food world full of hamburgers and ice-creams.
“I wasn’t really influenced by anything other than street foods,” she said.
“There’s a lot of savoury foods out there at the moment, like burgers, and I thought I could make a dessert burger.”
Ms Tania said her street food and dessert mash up concept wouldn’t end at burgers.
“We are going to have a series of foods for the program, so watch this space,” she said.
The quirky burgers will be sold at Ms Tania’s Glace Yellow Submarine on Friday 9 March and Sunday March 11 at the Melbourne Street Eatz festival at the St Kilda South Beach Reserve.
The submarine will also appear at the Flemington Grazing Trail & Cellar Door as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival on Saturday March 10.
