SPRING into the new season in a blooming good way by heading outdoors to find some of Victoria’s colourful wildflowers.

Grab the camera and the kids (or furbabies) to explore some of the state’s best parks and gardens for stunning spring flowers.

Pink Lakes

A two-hour drive south of Mildura visitors to Murray Sunset National Park can head to the famous salt-encrusted lakes and for a few weeks wildflowers.

Wide, sweeping plains are covered with iridescent pink pigface, daisies and wattles as the weather warms up.

The best time for flowers: September to mid-October.

Gorge Scenic Drive

On the outskirts of Beechworth in Victoria’s northeast is a stunning park perfect for those keen to spot spring’s purple, yellow and white wildflowers.

Take a slow drive or walk along the Gorge Scenic Drive in Beechworth’s Historic Park to spot some of the season’s best flowers.

There are also walking tracks throughout the area and the native bush is transformed with new life. If you’re not in a rush head to the top of Mt Pilot, just a 15 minute drive away for a sweeping view.

Best time for flowers: September to early October

Lerderderg State Park

A remote park an hour northwest of Melbourne turns into a riot of colour during spring but you will have to wait a few weeks before the flowers are in full bloom.

Later this month head to Lederderg State Park and it’s new campground to see the wattles, peas, heath and native orchids that will be in full bloom.

There will be a sea of orange and white flowers off Upper Chadwick near the campground.

Best time for flowers: late September to October

Greater Bendigo National Park

The regional city of Bendigo is surrounded by forest that comes alive with wattle and other flowers from August and right through spring.

Head to the aptly named Wildflower Drive, south east of Bendigo to see yellow wattle, box and ironbark trees. Or right in the middle of the regional city is Salomon Gully, a flora reserve.

Best time for flowers: mid-September to October

Great Otway National Park

Just under two hours away from Melbourne the Great Otway National Park is home to about one-quarter of Victoria’s plant species.

For those who love orchids it’s the best place to visits, with flowers throughout the Anglesea Heath.

Some of the best spots for the flowers including the Bambra-Aireys Inlet Rod and Bald Hills Road.

Best time for flowers: mid to late Spring onwards

Terrick Terrick National Park

Colourful grasslands of daisies, peas and lilies can be found 45 minutes west of Echuca at Terrick Terrick National Park.

The best spot to see the stunning wildflowers is at Fabians Block which is accessed by the Ferris Road.

Entry to the grasslands and the wildflowers is by foot only, and the gate is locked.

Best time for flowers: September

But if you want to stay close to Melbourne and don’t have the time to venture out to the regions there are still plenty of places to see beautiful displays.

Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden

Entry to the gardens are free and there’s plenty to do, but best of all it’s not hours away from Melbourne.

Throughout spring visitors can catch a glimpse of the daffodils, hellebores and camellias in September but later in Spring there are also rhododendrons and azaleas.

If it’s getting a bit crowded visit the nearby George Tindale Memorial Garden, Pirianda Garden or the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden to see the huge range of flowers blooming.

Werribee Park

On the other side of the city is Werribee Park which has the Victorian State Rose Garden and the stunning formal grounds around the Mansion.

The parterre plantings near the mansion will be a hit and there’s hundreds of different varieties of roses in the famous garden.

Best time for flowers: roses from September to March, with the peak in November. Around the mansion flowers will be blooming from mid-September onwards.
