Major sporting codes have called in a special coach to teach workers “how to be a man” in the modern age.

Estimated three million Australians living with anxiety and depression

Major sporting codes have called in a coach to teach workers “how to be a man” in the modern age.

Phill Nosworthy told the Herald Sun that a lot of men were having “a real wake up moment” amid the #MeToo movement and debates about “toxic masculinity”.

His “Emotional Leadership” lessons have encouraged men to tap into their emotions and dump the idea that they need to be stoic.

He recommended workplaces have emotional check ins at the start of meetings, where staff announce how they feel that day.

“The problem with a lot of guys is that they are constantly in PR mode – they are trying to convince people that they have got it together and that they are OK,” Mr Nosworthy said.

“There is a distorted stoicism where guys think being strong is just being stoic and having a stiff upper lip.

“That’s just putting a mask on.”

Mr Nosworthy, who has also consulted for Microsoft and Universal Music, attributed high rates of anxiety, high-range drinking and suicide to “a man’s own challenges understanding and engaging with his own emotions”.

He said companies had called him into to help men connect with themselves so that they could better connect with others in the office.

Men who pretended to have it all together and failed to understand emotions, Mr Nosworthy said, often “explode” at work.

WHY UPWEY IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE

“This is why you’ve got guys blowing up in conversations and people think ‘what on Earth is that really about’,” he said.

“The reason is that anger is easy is because it is the fastest emotion.

“But I haven’t met the guy who wakes up on a Monday and thinks ‘I can’t wait to go to the office today to make life miserable for as many people as possible’.”
