How to create your own Melbourne Cup Carnival hat at home

You can’t put your best fashionable foot forward at Flemington Racecourse this year, but you can still look the part at home. And no Melbourne Cup outfit is complete without a headpiece — so here’s how to make one with materials you already have on hand.

Fashions on the Flemington lawn have always had an element of fun at the Melbourne Cup Carnival, but this year they are expected to be even more flamboyant as fans embrace new fashion competition categories at home.

Mad Hatters will be included in the four Fashions on your Front Lawn contest categories titled Just for Fun, which have been introduced to encourage everyone to enjoy the moment.

Milliner Melissa Jackson and Channel 10 fashion reporter Victoria Latu are fans of the new concept, which will see punters embellish existing pieces or make their own homemade creations.

“It’s a great initiative and fun way for everyone, of any age, culture or style, to get involved. A hat should be worn to convey personality — be it wacky or avant-garde, subdued or sophisticated,” Jackson said.

“I suggest the more creative, showstopping and outrageous, the better. Think bold colours and interesting organic shapes.”

Latu said the new categories would give everyone the chance to take their race wear to a new level.

“This year has been crazy and many people will probably relish the idea of getting creative, having some fun and channelling all that into a hat — so I think it’s more fitting than ever,” she said.

New categories including Cup Week Costumes, Family Ties, Lounge in Style and Mad Hatters will ensure everyone can get into the Melbourne Cup Carnival spirit at home.

A panel of judges including Kris Smith, Joel Creasey and Gai Waterhouse will judge Instagram entries submitted on AAMI Victoria Derby Day, Lexus Melbourne Cup Day and Kennedy Oaks Day.

Category winners are to be announced on Seppelt Wines Stakes Day.

To enter, upload a photo to Instagram, tagging @FlemingtonVRC #cupweekfashion and the relevant category hashtag.

Just For Fun entries close on Thursday, November 5, at 11.59pm.
