Bear hugs and beaming smiles greeted the wives, partners and children of the stars of the AFL as they were reunited at the Queensland hub on Thursday after an agonising six weeks apart.
Geelong stars Tom Hawkins, Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield were among the players clearly emotional at the reunion with their loved ones after they were released from their 14- day quarantine.
Hawkins’ wife Emma and young daughters Arabella and Primrose were swept up in Tom’s arms, while Brit Selwood radiated joy at seeing her husband again.
Emma expressed her gratitude and appreciation for being able to travel and reunite her family. She posted on Instagram: “Reunited after six weeks! It’s the longest we have ever been apart as a family since we decided that we were going to be a family! Another strange chapter in the crazy year 2020 has been.
“But a few weeks ago we embarked on an adventure to see dad. 2 weeks quarantine, some quality (read: intense) two on one time with my children and here we are. Today we got to see Tom! We are so lucky we are able to come and spend some time as a family in QLD while my husband works.
“We know there are families who spend longer apart in very tough conditions who don’t have the opportunity to be reunited at the moment and thats so hard and I’m thinking of you all so much. It’s not a holiday, nor has it been, but we get to be together for the moment, and that’s my measure of happiness and I’m incredibly grateful for everyone involved who has facilitated this. Squeeze the ones you love!”
Emma and her children were among a group of about 400 partners and families of AFL players in the Queensland Hub who travelled north two weeks ago. Fellow Geelong partners including Mardi Dangerfield and Brit Selwood all travelled, along with Tigers star Bashar Houli and his family.
