Looking for a way to change up your yearly hot cross buns without straying too far from the classic? Head to Aldi for a 550 gram giant hot cross bun.

It seems like supermarkets and bakeries get more into hot cross buns every year. Each February or March, our favourite sultana-dense Christian delicacies reappear on shelves, alongside new iterations. Some are more innocent – with added chocolate chips or cinnamon, while others are getting insane – do we really need to mix pizza Shapes with hot cross buns?

We’re already spoiled for choice when it comes to flavours, so Aldi has opted for a different approach to reimagining the Easter classic. They made them 20 centimetres wide.

How to feel in control around food

The German supermarket’s new take on the hot cross bun is a giant 550 grams, 633 per cent bigger than the classic fruit hot cross bun.

The French brioche panettone-looking hot cross bun is eleven servings worth of spiced fruity goodness.

We could eat these treats all month long, but what is the nutritional value of hot cross buns?

Can hot cross buns provide some nutritional benefits?

While they are a sugary treat, hot cross buns can provide us with some fibre and complex carbohydrates.

The cinnamon can also contribute anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

According to dietician Lyndi Cohen, “hot cross buns are neither unhealthy nor healthy – they’re neutral. They’re just a food. And you only eat and enjoy them at one time of the year, so there’s absolutely zero point feeling guilty about sinking your teeth into the perfect bun.”

So enjoy! Aldi Australia’s buying director for bread and bakery, Luke Iemma said, “We’re always excited to introduce our customers to new additions to our Easter bakery range each year, and we’re sure hot cross bun aficionados will love Aldi’s Giant Brioche Hot Cross Bun this season.

“It’s almost the same size as a soccer ball! Now the only decision left to make is if you plan to share it with your loved ones or eat it all to yourself. No judgement here!”

You can buy Aldi’s giant hot cross bun for $7.99 in store from today.
