A washed rind cheese from Milawa, Otway walnuts, Shaw River buffalo yoghurt and fish from Corner Inlet – not only are these ingredients the makings of a gorgeously gourmet hamper but a gold medal-winning feast, too.
These products are some of the top Victorian produce announced as national Gold Medal winners in the 2020 Delicious Produce Awards.
Following state judging in March, winning produce was shipped to the panel of national judges, including Neil Perry, Colin Fassnidge and Matt Moran who tasted in isolation due to COVID-19 restrictions rather than in a group as in previous years.
King River Gold from Milawa Cheese, Brigid’s Well from Holy Goat Cheese, Shaw River buffalo yoghurt and Gelato Messina Jersey milk were awarded gold medals for Victoria in the From the Dairy category.
Mountain Yuzu, Otway walnuts, Snowflake Mushrooms’ king oyster mushrooms and Tellurian Fruit Gardens organic fruit were gonged in the From the Earth category, while second-generation fisherman Bruce Collis - and reigning delicious. Best Producer – took out gold From the Sea for his seasonal Corner Inlet seafood.
Free range pork from Bundarra Berkshire and McIvor Farm and Sher Wagyu’s F1 Black Label beef and Warialda Belted Galloway heritage beef round out the Victorian winners in the From the Paddock.
Delicious editorial director Kerrie McCallum said this year’s awards might look different but the quality of products remained of outstanding quality.
“For many producers, this year has been tougher than ever, following drought, bushfires and flood, then scaling back production due to COVID-19, so we were determined to find a way to continue because there’s never been a more important time to support our producers,” she said. “Congratulations to this year’s Gold Medallists. The produce they delivered during a time of unprecedented change showed just how hard Australian farmers, fishermen and artisans work at their craft.”
Now in its 15th year, the delicious. Harvey Norman Produce Awards celebrate the country’s new, innovative and consistently outstanding Australian ingredients grown, caught, sourced or produced with dedication, passion and knowledge.
Alphington Farmers Market is one of three national finalists vying for the Outstanding Farmer’s Market award, which will be announced – along with national trophy winners – in October.
Other category winners announced in October include Producer of the Year; Best New Product; In the Bottle; Outstanding Viticulturist; Outstanding Region; Outstanding Farmers’ Market; Outstanding Innovation; Outstanding Design; the Maggie Beer Award for Outstanding Contribution to Australian Food; the Unearthed Next-Gen Chef Award; Outstanding Native Producer; Outstanding Artisan; and new award, Unearthed Next-Gen Producer.
