The star couple behind Melbourne’s hottest new restaurant Society has sensationally left the multimillion dollar project, in a move that’s rocked the restaurant world.

The star couple behind Melbourne’s biggest restaurant opening of the year has quit.

Martin Benn and Vicki Wild sensationally closed their high end Sydney restaurant Sepia in 2018 to move to Melbourne and open fine diner Society with Chin Chin owner Chris Lucas.

But after four years of planning and building, the duo announced on Friday afternoon they were stepping away from the multimillion project, which had only been open for five days before the state’s latest lockdown.

Chris Lucas, of Lucas Restaurants, did not respond to the Herald Sun’s request for comment.

In a statement released by his publicist, Martin Benn said he had decided to leave Society prior to the current lockdown.

“Martin Benn has ended his contract with Society, a decision that was made before the current lockdown,” the statement read.

“Martin is saddened to be leaving the team of loyal and talented chefs, but is confident that they will continue to ensure the ongoing success of the business.”

“Martin is proud of what he has achieved in opening Society. For now, Martin is hanging up his chef’s jacket and considering some new options, and is looking forward to a well earned break.”

A Society insider told the Herald Sun they were shocked to hear of the couple’s sudden departure just five days after opening, especially considering they were financially supported during Covid for the past three years.

“It’s a shame, but if anyone can do it Chris can do it. He has survived a lot worse.”

They said the focus for Society was to always be a backdrop to supporting young Australian talent.

Luke Headon, who has worked at Society since the project launched and Heston Blumenthal’s UK restaurant The Fat Duck, will step in as executive chef.

Thomas Woods will retain his role at Society’s second restaurant, Lillian Terrace.
