Melbourne cafes and restaurants are typically buzzy places, but Canadian podcaster Julie Gauthier has found another unique use for them.

Under the moniker Julie G, the British Columbian journalist gently (and audibly) nuzzles thousands of people around the world to slumber in her new podcast: Pepperoni Pizza Dreams: food whispers for sleep.

In her sixth episode, Brekkie, Lunch and Dinner (Melbourne), she soothingly reads through food and drink menus of iconic eateries such as Hector’s Deli, Lune Croissanterie, North Melbourne’s Good Measure Cafe and Prahran’s Osteria Renata.

“It’s just interesting enough for you to tune in, but not so interesting it would prevent you from falling asleep,” she told the Herald Sun.

“The repetitious listing off of names of dishes, ingredients, and prices is soothing and even feels a bit hypnotic.”

Launching this year, the podcast has been widely received by food lovers around the world, with the Melbourne episode receiving the second-highest number of downloads.

So why, in a world of delicious food destinations, did she choose Melbourne?

“When I was in my mid to late 20s, I lived in Australia and New Zealand for a few years,” she said.

“I really missed out on experiencing (Melbourne’s) incredible food scene, and I thought it would be fun to plan an episode where I have this make-believe day in Melbourne, stopping to eat at some of the city’s best spots.”

“I ultimately chose the menus that appealed the most to me — meaning the ones that made me the hungriest.”

Julie admits the podcast doesn’t deliver “edge of your seat” content, but that’s the point.

“Food whispers for sleep: it’s a silly little concept — that works,” she said.

Pepperoni Pizza Dreams is planning another Melbourne episode in 2025, this time on sandwiches.
