Opehlia, a new daytime eatery by Yolk Group, opens in Westgarth

The northern suburbs cafe pro behind Terror Twilight, Convoy and Tinker is launching a “grown up” daytime eatery with brunch, wine and a killer vinyl catalogue.

Cafe pro Kieran Spiteri didn’t want to follow the same template for his new venue Ophelia.

Unlike his thriving northern suburbs cafes — Terror Twilight, Convoy and Tinker — Spiteri wanted to build something more ‘grown up’ for the urban Westgarth corner.

“We didn’t want to replicate what we always do,” he said.

“We wanted to challenge ourselves … put something different together and really champion produce.”

Ophelia, a daytime eatery heroing brunch and wine, is the fifth venue by Yolk Group’s dream team Spiteri, Ben Argentino and Bec Moore.

Group executive chef Dale Kemp and head chef Emma Kaye’s two-fold menu divides an early morning section with a limited “eggy” offering and pastries, with a lunch menu packed with savoury eats, deli plates, salads and sandwiches.

“It’s where you go for a good brunch that’s not a cafe or a restaurant,” Spiteri said.

“Ophelia is somewhere that really caters to the after 10.30am crowd … with lunch and cocktails.”

Some calling card eats include the breakfast eggs with relish, salad, cultured butter and bread, crumbed chicken thighs, stuffed peppers, savoury tarts and scones with miso butter.

Spiteri will open the large-scale space daily, from 7am to 4pm weekdays and 8am to 4pm weekends, with plans to open two nights a week for dinner over summer.

“We wanted to create a night time space that wouldn’t feel like you’re sitting in a cafe — you could really sit here all day, with a homely feel and be comfortable at night.”

Ophelia, 85 High St, Northcote, opening Wednesday 16 October.
