While the majority of this long-weekend’s activities may revolve around sport, here are three newly opened cafes, restaurants and pubs to visit for a decent feed.
Beach House Brighton
Brighton has welcomed a new waterside cafe overlooking the iconic beach boxes. Opening last fortnight, the 50-seater cafe and kiosk is part of Bayside City Council’s multimillion redevelopment to the old Brighton Life Saving Club. The daytime eatery is run by the same team who run North Point cafe. Expect Axil Coffee on the grind, an all-day menu brimming with king prawn and octopus rolls, fresh juices and soft-serve for the kids (or big kids).
Open daily, 7am to 4pm.

Casa Mariotti Bar and Cucina
Richmond is home to a new family run wine bar and restaurant. Brothers Guido and Giacomo Guerrieri have worked in restaurants across Italy and Melbourne, and will pump out renditions of their nonna’s treasured recipes. Roman rice balls bouncing in red sauce, bucatini all’ amatriciana, cream-filled Italian buns and tiramisu all make an appearance.

The Batesford Hotel
This longstanding country pub has reopened after a schmick revamp. Built in the 1800s, the venue recently was taken over by the same team who own Geelong’s Felix and ALMA restaurants. Elevated pub classics will be running hot in the kitchen, including the Bordelaise burger, a selection of steaks and pork chops with apple and cabbage slaw.
