A Bentleigh bakery has been named as one of the world’s best pastry stores.
Artisanal Bakehouse, run by French-born chef David Caillaud, debuted on this year’s global La Liste guide, alongside 21 other local venues.
Melbourne pastry chef Rosemary Andrews won the prestigious ‘Pastry Opening of the Year’ in the prestigious awards — six months after opening her Malvern shop Mietta.
Ms Andrews accepted the trophy at a lavish ceremony in Paris on Monday, saying she was “honoured” to receive the gong.
“I am truly humbled and grateful for the support from both my staff and customers,” she said.
La Liste managing director Hélène Pletrini said Mietta set a new standard for authenticity in the industry.
“(It) reminds us all of the real point of pastry — the pleasure of eating great cake,” she said.
“Thank you for giving cakes their true value by displaying them like fine jewellery or a sought-after handbag, in your beautiful Melbourne patisserie.”
Artisanal Bakehouse opened in 2021, with Mr Caillaud helping build the shop’s cult-local following with his famed apple turnovers, croissants and pain au chocolat.
He’s enlisted the help of star pastry chef, Baptiste Marcais, to bring the creations to life.
“It’s exciting to make the list. When you start at 3.30am in the morning you have to be motivated,” he said.
“What makes us different is we’re French, and we want to deliver a quality product.”
“During the week we serve 250 to 300 people per day and on weekends its up to 700.”
He also bakes sourdough loaves, pies and quiches.
Other Melbourne bakeries to make this year’s list include Lune, Brunetti Oro, Tokyo Lamington, Falco Bakery and St Kilda’s iconic Monarch Cakes.
Melbourne venues aren’t shy of a La Liste mention.
Tarts Anon founders Gareth Whitton and Catherine Way have previously won the ‘Pastry Opening of the Year’ award.
The global guide ranks the world’s best restaurants, pastry shops, and hotels from a mix of critical and customer reviews, overseen by a grading panel made up of thousands of industry experts and chefs worldwide.
