Where Melbourne's food icons like to eat

From wine bars with smart snacks, pies that sellout before noon and the best family-style pub to take the kids — here are the best places to eat and drink in Armadale, according to Amaru head chef Clinton McIver.

ARMADALE CELLARS

Phil will tell you that “life is too short to drink bad wine” and I’d have to agree. He’s always been a great supporter of local vignerons and great interstate and international producers. Armadale Cellars will have something for every occasion, be it a Wednesday night dinner or a significant celebration, Phil and the team will have you covered. Don’t forget to sign up to their mailing list to keep up to date with wine tastings and private dinners in the underground cellar.

OTTER’S PROMISE

This place has the best collection of craft beers in Melbourne (plus some hard to find stuff that’s only available by allocation in small quantities). They always have a different selection on tap which changes seasonally. The atmosphere is always warm and the service is knowledgeable and genuine. If you are in the area it’s simply a must.

RINA’S CUCINA

Rina’s has always been a local favourite. Recently it was taken over by Danny Natoli. He and Adrian Li have carried on the legacy of Rina’s, creating a contemporary Italian restaurant that reflects seasonality and stunning flavours cooked with love and influenced with tradition.

An outstanding suburban restaurant.

MOBY CAFE

Moby is arguably the busiest cafe in Armadale. It sells Five Senses coffee and always has a section of small-batch brews featuring different ‘artists’. Come down for a spicy prawn omelette and a 16-hour cold brew.

BRUNO & CO

Great coffee with great service and hospitality. It has a wonderful little Italian-inspired menu which easily extends into a beautiful outdoor lunch on High St with a few glasses of vino. A wonderful enoteca-style cafe. Always a winner.

EURO PATISSERIE

Cakes, pastries, bread and sandwiches. It’s all here but for the Amaru team and I, it has become our go-to destination for pies. Euro Patisserie has a European feel and is always busy (for good reason). Some pie varieties will often sell out by midmorning. My favourite is the cheese, followed by the potato pie.

MT ERICA HOTEL

I love the family vibe of this remodelled pub. It has a great traditional-style front bar followed by a large open-plan bistro and outdoor area. They have a small wine list and a fabulous family-friendly menu that features some great local produce and a rotisserie section. This is one of my go-to places for a great relaxed family dinner or an afternoon beer with friends.
