5 things to eat, drink at Moomba Festival 2023: Dole Whip, 48H Pizza

A Disneyland dessert favourite and world-famous woodfired pizza will be running hot at Moomba Festival this long-weekend.

More Moomba magic is on the cards this year with an extra day to explore the foodie gems of our city’s favourite festival.

Here are five, budget-friendly things to eat at the family event that’s held over the Labour Day long weekend at Melbourne’s Alexandra Gardens and Birrarung Marr.

Dole Whip: $8-15

This Disneyland-famous dessert is making its Moomba debut. Lusciously fruity soft serve piles into a halved pineapple, cup or in a float bobbing in pineapple juice. Flavours include pineapple, strawberry, mango and watermelon, and all are made without dairy, lactose or gluten.

Dingo Ate My Taco: $14-22

OG-birria kings Dingo Ate My Taco is a new addition to this year’s line-up. It’s Mexican meets American BBQ, with the birria (beef brisket and oaxacan cheese) tacos dunked in consomme and spicy salsa a must.

48H Pizza Bar On The Road: $20-23

48H Pizza owners Fabio Biscaldi and Michele Circhirillo took their award-winning woodfire pizzas on tour during lockdown. Now the food truck— 48H Pizza Bar on the Road — is back, slinging six types of pizza for the Moomba masses including the crowd-favourite margherita. Also try the vaie (mixed mushrooms), capricciosa, ham and cheese and the tropea (with homemade n’duja and hot salami).

Taka Taka Kottu: $7-$20

Sri Lankan street food Taka Taka Kottu takes shredded roti and wok-fries it with veggies and chicken, lamb or vegetable curries. The concept was born out of reducing food waste and is often referred to as a Sri Lankan kebab made teppanyaki-style. Try either the lamb, chicken, veggie or spicy chickpea creations.

Twistto: $12

Did you even go to Moomba if you didn’t get a deep-fried spiral of potato on a stick?

Twistto riffs on Korea’s trending street food: battered, fried and seasoned twisted spuds on a stick. Amp up the flavour with salty seasonings such as chicken, cheese, fried chicken, mild chilli, sea salt or salt and vinegar.
