STUFFED LAMB
This is Middle Eastern home-style cooking, specialising in lamb or chicken mandi.
Mandi is a dish of chicken or lamb slow poached in stock with saffron and various spices until very tender. The remaining stock is used for basmati rice which is cooked is a tandoor oven in the ground then finished with nuts and sultanas.
Simple but delicious Arabic home cooking.

SARGENT’S CAKES
Sargent’s Cakes has been around since the 1950s and is still going strong. Perfect if you’re after a bakery pie, sausage roll or pastie and especially good if you like old-school bakery pastries like a coffee scroll or apple turnover. My favourite is the family size meat pie that’s only $12.

THE OAK HILL
It’s my day off, I’ve been cooking all week and don’t feel like making breakfast. I’m heading to The Oak Hill for eggs Benedict with Asian pulled pork, homemade hash browns and hollandaise. They also make a great chipotle chilli scramble with bacon and crispy shallots. Coffee is roasted in house and is really good. Staff are super friendly and helpful. After 5.30pm The Oak Hill changes pace for dinner serving wood-fired pizza.

AKKAR PASTRY
This family-run Middle Eastern bakery on Broadway is my favourite stop on the way to the train station. Great cheese and spinach, lahmacun or shanklish-stuffed pastries are the perfect snack before work. I love to get down there on Sunday as well, to get an easy take home brunch. Most menu items are about $4. Bargain.

SONNY’S BOTTEGA
Good bars are pretty hard to come by this far north and this one is great. My partner and I both love a glass of prosseco and Sonny’s is the place to get some great Australian or Italian bubbles. It has a nice little courtyard out back to enjoy the sunshine and some good simple Italian food. Housemade salami and pasta are usually on the menu along with cheeses, olives and panini sandwiches. A really good way to spend an afternoon.
