Where can you find great bars, delicious roast duck laksa, flaky artisanal pastries and a cafe-wine-bar-bottle-shop combo?
North Melbourne, of course.
Chef Daniel Wilson shares his top spots in the suburb.
JOE TAYLOR
At Joe Taylor they have an eye-wateringly massive range of spirits. The bartenders can steer you in the right direction for a cocktail to suit your tastes or even make one up on the spot.

WESTWOOD
This all-day cafe, wine bar and bottle shop is a hidden gem. The kitchen is headed by talented chef Rhys Bennett and his food is simple, seasonal and most delicious. Owner Michael always has interesting wines by the glass.

KL BUNGA RAYA
This Malaysian eating house is always busy. I love their roast duck laksa but usually get it with vegetables instead of noodles for a lighter option. They do an excellent minced pork and eggplant claypot, too. They are BYO.

SARDES QUALITY MEATS
I have been buying meat from Harry and Linda at the Queen Vic Market for years. They not only have a great range of local grass-fed beef, but also a great range of mid to high-end Wagyu beef, too.
Meat & Fish Hall, Queen Victoria Market
THE LINCOLN
The Lincoln is a classic old pub run by the always effervescent Iain Ling and his team. They have an interesting range of craft beers on tap and the wine list is cracking. The kitchen puts out very tasty and interesting food.
91 Cardigan St, Carlton
M & G CAIAFA
Michael and the family at M & G Caiafa at Queen Victoria Market have an exhaustive range of artisanal bread and pastries, as well as a huge range of spices, baking ingredients, chocolate, nuts, seeds, nut butter, oils, vinegars, and the list goes on.
Dairy Produce Hall, Queen Victoria Market
SOSTA CUCINA
I would argue that Sosta Cucina is North Melbourne’s fanciest restaurant. The San Daniele prosciutto with mozzarella di bufala and torta fritta and calamari are a great place to start. Great Italian wine list.

FYIDaniel will host a stress-free Christmas cooking demo on Dec 14 11am-noon outside the Meat & Fish Hall at the Queen Victoria Market. qvm.com.au
