Sons of Mischief has healthy menu with naughty and nice offerings
After tragically losing his father to cancer almost two years ago, one Melbourne cafe owner has taken a healthy direction with the menu at his new Highett cafe — but there’s still room to indulge.
Eating Out

Losing his dad to cancer almost two years ago changed the way cafe owner Dean Fourtzis saw food.
His Armadale venue Street Talk Espresso had been about showstopping brunch plates for the last decade, so when he opened his new cafe Sons of Mischief in January, he went back to basics.
The Highett venue, aptly named after he and co-owner Rishit Patel’s cheeky personalities, has a mix of naughty (but nice) dishes.
The menu has hints of Mediterranean flavours, influenced by Dean’s Greek and Israeli heritage.

WHY MUSCAT IS NO LONGER A ‘DAGGY OLD MAN’ DRINK
FOOD
A picture-perfect granola is pleasantly surprising. Forget cups of sugar-laden oats, grains and seeds, topped with token fruits and a dollop of yoghurt. Sons of Mischief is portion conscious and the plating is on point — there’s saffron poached baby pear, orange, kiwi, strawberry and raspberry stacks, mango and berry Panna Cotta, cinnamon Co-yo with on-trend hempnola ($16) served on a stone plate. I’ll be back for more. The bacon, maple goodness of the benedict has me asking why we don’t enjoy this flavour combo more often — there’s the smoked hollandaise, two poached eggs, sweet maple, salty bacon on top of Dr Marty crumpets ($18). Make a beeline for the buttermilk pancakes if you’re after a (healthy) sugar hit. You’ll get a six-stack, with Nutella cream, hot Canadian maple, smashed hazelnut and fresh berries ($18), while the Greens Bowl of charred cauliflower, snow peas, brussels sprouts, pumpkin hummus, baked sweet potato, toasted seeds and vinaigrette ($16) will make you glow from within.
DRINK
The deliciously-smooth coffee by Nicollo will satisfy your caffeine hit. There’s also an option to have batch brew coffee with organic grass fed butter and MCT oil ($6), perfect for those who jumped on the bulletproof bandwagon. The vegan snickers smoothie is the ultimate naughty but nice treat, made with vegan choc protein, raw cacau, almond milk, banana and peanut butter ($9.50).
SERVICE
Staff are attentive and prompt to get coffee and food to the table during our early morning power breakfast. A smoothie to-go lands just as we fix up the bill. Perfect timing.
X FACTOR
There’s a few spaces to play here — outside the cafe, the front and back rooms and the courtyard, seating 120 people. In the front room the neon-mouth sign on the wall and the indoor greenery steal the show. The sign is another nod to Dean and Rishit’s personalities, adding pops of colour to the otherwise blank canvas.
BANG FOR YOUR BUCK
Great value with all breakfast and lunch options under $20. The bottomless brunch gives you two hours of unlimited brunch and booze for $50 per person.
VERDICT
Perfect for a post-dog walk, chin wag and coffee in the morning or relaxed catch up with mates on a Saturday afternoon, Sons of Mischief will have you feeling nourished and satisfied without the guilt.
