Chef’s guide: Where to eat and drink in Glen Waverley
From sea urchin rice bowls to one of the most highly regarded hot pot places in the world in the first Melbourne venue, here’s all the best places to eat in Glen Waverley.
Eating Out
Don't miss out on the headlines from Eating Out. Followed categories will be added to My News.
HONG KONG DIM SUM
This is a staple breakfast spot of mine and I think I might go there a little too often. My order is always the same — a century egg and pork congee. Sometimes I’ll treat myself to a fried football or chicken feet as well.

THE BLACK TORO
When I feel like branching outside of Asian cuisine, I head to The Black Toro with my family for tasty Mexican food. I’ve been going there with my parents for ages, and these days it’s a favourite spot for my wife and son.

UNI BOOM BOOM
This is the only place I know that does big rice bowls with really generous amounts of uni (sea urchin) and other fresh seafood. It’s just like you’d get in Japan, and really satisfying.

HAIDILAO
These guys aren’t actually open yet, but I’m eagerly anticipating their launch at The Glen soon. It’s one of the most highly regarded hot pot places in the world, and I think this is their first venue in Melbourne. It’s opening right above Bia Hoi and apparently it’s going to be huge. I can’t wait to try it.

DRAGON HOT POT
I think I might be Dragon Hot Pot’s #1 fan.
I eat indiscriminately at all their venues in Melbourne. It’s always a fun vibe, especially with a group of friends. My staff and I head there a lot for after work dinners. Hot (pot) tip — whatever you do, don’t wear white to Dragon Hot Pot. Trust me.

TAN HUNG ASIAN GROCER
This is a fantastic grocer where you can find a massive variety of products. One of my biggest guilty pleasures is cooking up packet noodles at home. I’ve spent a lot of time on Thai and Vietnamese varieties, but recently found a Sichuan version here and it knocked my socks off. I often pop in and pick up some fresh produce and a sneaky packet or two after work.
