Chef’s guide: Where to eat and drink in Apollo Bay and surrounds
From the best place for some delicious fish and chips with a view to the little hole in the wall cafe serving up kick-arse coffee. Here are the best places to eat and drink in Apollo Bay and surrounds.
Eating Out
Don't miss out on the headlines from Eating Out. Followed categories will be added to My News.
APOLLO BAY FISHERMEN’S CO-OP
For some honest fish and chips and a harbour atmosphere that’s hard to beat. Grab a piece of battered fish (ask the staff for local fish), some chips and lemon and park yourself on the deck overlooking the harbour and watch the fishing boats go by.
2 Breakwater Rd
ICARO WHOLEFOOD CAFE
For some kick-arse coffee, healthy treats and tonics, this little hole in the wall provides some much-needed relief from the bombardment of fast food joints.
1G Moore St
APOLLO BAY SATURDAY MARKET
I love this little market, it is small but there’s some great local personalities and produce to be found. I always try to get in early to buy my veg from Jodi at The Green Acre. I grab my eggs from Ron Lawler, who has free range chooks on his farm at Horden Vale, and then visit Judy Forester from Otway Herbs who always has an interesting selection of native and exotic seedlings.

MOVIDA LORNE
I love Frank Camorra’s food — it’s like my soul food. I call into Movida Lorne for the famous Ortiz anchovy with smoked tomato sorbet, a plate of jamon and a glass of amontillado sherry. The staff are always welcoming and have knowledge of their food and wine to boot.
176 Mountjoy Pde, Great Ocean Rd, Lorne
WYE RIVER GENERAL STORE
For breakfast this is my No. 1, this place just ebbs and flows all day long with the best pastries on the coast made in house and some great coffee.
35 Great Ocean Rd, Wye River
WYE BEACH HOTEL
My favourite coastal pub. For a cold beer with the best view, this is the place. The staff are always friendly and Paul and Angus (father-son owners) make you feel right at home. Many afternoons have been spent on the deck overlooking the ocean watching the world go by.
19-21 Great Ocean Rd, Wye River
FYI: Steve Earl will showcase locally caught seafood and host a bycatch cooking demonstration at this year’s Apollo Bay Seafood Festival, held at Apollo Bay Harbour this weekend (Feb 14-16).
