Demolition has begun on the “David Jones” carpark at Chadstone to make way for 850 new spaces, solar panel roofing and redesigned entrances.
The 1200 spaces which have been temporarily removed will be returned by August, followed by the 850 new spaces in spring, in time for Black Friday and Christmas trade.
The most southern entrance into the David Jones car park (coming in off Dandenong Road) remains open but the rooftop is closed, so detours are in place in some areas with plenty of directional signage and traffic management on-site.
Chadstone Centre Manager Michael Whitehead said while the former David Jones rooftop car park is closed, customers can park without interruption anywhere else across the Chadstone precinct.
“We’re excited to see Chadstone’s evolution continue. Our community told us they wanted more parking which, combined with highly accurate guidance technology as well as new access lanes and ramps, will make it much easier to find a park,” Mr Whitehead says.
Already the largest, free car park in Australia, parking is a priority project as part of Chadstone’s $685 million evolution.
When complete the additional 850 spaces will provide customers with more than 11,000 free parking spaces.
The first stage of the car park project is expected to generate close to 300 full time equivalent jobs.
Vicinity Centres Chief Development Officer Carolyn Viney said the new car park will feature wider ramps, new directional signage to create a better flow of traffic and an upgraded parking guidance system, directing customers to parks.
