A Kyneton bakery has won the title for making Australia’s best pie.
Country Cob Bakery’s caramelised pork and pepper creation beat 1700 other pies from 340 bakeries nationwide to earn the top gong.
This is the second year in a row brothers Chans and Ryan Khun have won Australia’s Best Pie and Pastie Competition, hosted by the Baking Association of Australia.
The bakery’s satay seafood pie claimed the title last year.
Country Cob entered 18 pie flavours in this year’s competition, cleaning up 12 gold and several silver medals, including the best seafood pie for the curried scallop creation.
The caramelised pork and pepper pie is made from three-hour slow cooked pork leg, that’s been marinated overnight.
Ryan said a lot of work went into creating the perfect pie.
“The pastry must be good, be very thin and accompany the flavour,” he says.
“(The judges) might judge on appearance, colour, uniformity and shape and the filling is judged on flavour and richness.”
Locals and tourists have been making the trek to Kyneton after learning of the bakery’s win last year — something Ryan thinks will continue now they’ve claimed the title for another year.
