WE know Victorians love a good pie, but now it’s official — we make great ones, too.

Edison Bakehouse in Monbulk was crowned the best gourmet pie in the country for their steak and pepper pie.

Owner and chief baker Sopheak Chin said it was a great honour to take the trophy back to the popular bakery in the Dandenong Ranges.

“It’s the first time entering the competition, so we’re very, very happy,” he said.

The baker said it was the “powerful but balanced pepper you can really taste” in the pie that impressed the judges.

With about 20 different pie flavours offered at any time at the bakery, Mr Chin said he was always experimenting with new pies — including a chicken and banana curry pie that won a gold medal in the competition.

“We try and make new flavours, and if the customer enjoys it, we keep doing it,” he says.

Other category winners at the comp included Rolling Pin Pies Cakes in Ocean Grove for their Croc Korma pie, Mowatts in Sunbury won with their Chicken Balti Pie and Terang Country Bakery took out the brekkie pie category with their Eggs Benny pie.

JoJo’s in Kermot was named the gluten-free winner for their wagyu caramelised onion pie and Country Cobb in Kyneton added to the trophy cabinet with their chili con carne pie.
