There’s something so nostalgic about drive-in cinemas. What was once a regular feature on many Australians' social calendars has now become more of a relic from a bygone era.
But one family-run business in North Queensland is determined to preserve the dying industry by adding a unique aspect to the standard drive-in experience.
Mareeba Drive-In lets people watch a movie from the comfort of their vehicle and then stay put! Yep, it’s a drive-in cinema turned campsite and it’s been dubbed the "coolest campsite ever" by many who have had the chance to visit it.

The unique campsite that's also budget-friendly
Located in a picturesque town and surrounded by nature views, this quirky camping spot is a hit among families, couples, and friends looking for a special night out.
For just $14, campers can watch two movies under the stars and stay overnight in their tent, campervan or motorhome.
While fires or gas cookers aren't allowed, visitors can still enjoy a variety of takeaway favourites at the on-site diner where menu items are made in-house using fresh, locally sourced produce.
The prices might surprise you too, and even bring back some nostalgia because burgers start at just $8.50, hot dogs are $5.50, and fish and chips are $9.

According to the website, people are encouraged to make themselves at home and bring whatever they need to make the most of their drive-in experience.
“Bring blankets, pillows and sleeping bags or even mattresses and lie down in the back of your van, ute or car,” it says. “Sit on outdoor chairs in front of your car or on the grass in front of the huge screen. Some patrons have attended with quite luxurious setups on their utes, including lounge chairs to make the most of the night!”
And before you ask - you can bring your furry friends, as long as they are kept on a lead and are with you at all times.
This place really does tick all the boxes!

'Must-see'
Aussies have flocked to social media to rave about this ‘best kept secret’, which likely won’t be a secret for much longer.
“What a great concept. $14pp to camp up at the Mareeba Drive-Inn and you get two movies to watch!” someone wrote on Facebook.
“What a beautiful idea and something special in this day of electronics, what a change,” another praised.
“Love this. Because who wants to drive home after sitting for four or five hours watching a movie during the night?” said a third.
Then a mum who is doing van life with her husband and two kids said it was “the most unique overnight stop we have had in almost a year of travelling.”
Over on Instagram, a travel blogger wrote: “This place does amazing budget-friendly food! Take one thing from me - you NEED to try their Spanish mackerel burger - and get there early if you want a good spot because it gets very busy haha.”
“How cool is it when you can bring your whole home to the movies?! This weekend was Despicable Me 4 and Fall Guy, so it catered for the whole family!” another mum wrote alongside photos of their cosy campervan set up.
“A great night out for all,” someone else declared.
“Once the lights go out, you can enjoy the stars before camping out in your vehicle or tent.”
And finally, another happy camper shared: “This place is an absolute gem, great hospitality, very reasonably priced, and an awesome atmosphere. Put this on your must-see list.”
