'Wash ya bin': Aussies divided over new bin scheme

“Damn what a lovely image to look at while eating lunch.”

With everything you’re putting in it, it wouldn’t be a surprise for your bin to get a little… gross over time.

But, following the introduction of a new initiative, a Perth local has taken to social media to expose the new norm for their council bins - and people are divided.

“Perth FOGO is going delightfully well”

A Perth Reddit user has taken to the platform to expose the new look of their bins, following the implementation of a new FOGO program in the area.

FOGO stands for ‘food and organic waste’, and has seen local governments across Perth provide better practice three-bin kerbside collection systems, including a dedicated bin for these items.

However, while the initiative has been a win for the area sorting its waste, locals aren’t so sold on the idea.

“Perth FOGO is going delightfully well,” the user said sarcastically.

“Next doors bin, smells amazing. Pretty sure the pink sludge is liquified maggots.”

Accompanied was a photo of said neighbour’s bin, and the pink sludge looks concerning, to say the least.

Commenters were divided

A number of commenters on the post were just as disgusted by the sight.

“Damn what a lovely image to look at while eating lunch,” said one person.

“Delicious bin juice…” another said sarcastically.

But, others thought the user was being dramatic, suggesting getting rid of it was as easy as washing your bin - like you should do with all your other bins.

“What do you expect, it's a receptacle for rotten food waste. Much like any other bin, it might need to be hosed out occasionally to prevent smelling,” said one commenter.

“Wash ya bin,” another agreed.

Is there a better way?

Thankfully, commenters did come through with some slightly more helpful suggestions if you do have a stinky bin at home.

“If you've got a bunch of food scraps, put them in used paper first. Depending on where it's being stored, you could drill a hole in the bottom and all that bin juice goes back Into the garden,” one person suggested.

“Put the food into the free FOGO bags you can collect,” another said.

“Finally a use for the paper bags you get grocery delivery in. And the paper wraps from Who Gives a Crap toilet paper,” said another.
