"I'd rather spend that much on meat that is fresh and not on the verge of causing food poisoning"

If you time your shopping correctly, a good quick sale can be a godsend.

Dinner for 50% off? Yes please!

But, one Coles shopper has taken to social media exposing a product that’s not quite 50% - it’s not even 20% or 10% - and people are pissed.

“Really Coles?!?”

A Coles shopper has taken to Reddit exposing a quick sale item he came across at Coles.

The product, a dozen Australian lamb cutlets, has originally been priced at $44.51 - or $45/kg.

So, you’d be hoping for a good discount the day before their best before date.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t quite the case.

In the post, simply captioned ‘Really Coles?!?’ the shopper shared a photo of the quick sale price - $42.28.

Yep, a whole $2.23 off. A whole 5% off.

“What a waste of food”

Needless to say, fellow Coles shoppers were fuming at the embarrassing attempt at a discount.

“Expiring today, and yet they only got reduced by a whole 2.23. What a waste of food because I'd rather spend that much on meat that is fresh and not on the verge of causing food poisoning,” one person said.

“Wowsers, what a value,” another said sarcastically.

“Bro. No one is going to buy that,” said a third, more bluntly.

Others said the original price was the problem.

“Bruh! You'd have to be earning at least $60/hour for that to be reasonably affordable. On top of rent and other expenses,” said one person.

“Maybe just make it more affordable in the first place and it wouldn't sit around unsold until it expires,” another agreed.

“Lamb was cheap when I was a kid. I hated it. Now only wealthy ppl can afford it,” a third said.

Speaking to Kidspot, Coles said there are a number of factors that go into how a quick sale item is priced.

“We know our customers love good value so when a product is near it’s Best Before date we often mark it down so it can be enjoyed for a cheaper price, instead of being wasted," a spokesperson said.

“Markdowns do not uniformly take place at the same time across all stores. There are many things that can impact when this takes place including stock on hand, delivery schedules and team member rostering.

“Food safety is paramount, and we encourage customers to be mindful of Use By and Best Before dates, which determine the shelf life of food products, how long food can be kept before the quality deteriorates or when the item is unsafe to eat.”

Maybe it's not a good deal after all...

This isn't the first time Coles has been caught out with a questionable quick sale.

Earlier this year, shoppers spotted a deck of UNO card for $3.30, which would seem like a good deal if half of it weren't missing.

“At what point do you accept the loss in profits and just toss it?” the poster said.

At the time, Coles told Kidspot this incident was not in accordance with their usual standards.

“While we can't check the specifics of this reddit post without knowing where this occurred, this appears to be an isolated incident due to human error at an individual store," a Coles spokesperson said.

"Any product that is missing in part, should be removed from sale immediately and we encourage our customers to let us know if they spot anything in store that isn’t quite right.”
