Young man back in court on terrifying sexual assault charges

A man followed a woman from Broadmeadows railway station before he raped her and fled the scene, a court has heard.

A Melbourne man has pleaded guilty to the terrifying rape of a woman he stalked after seeing her at a railway station.

Murat Balcioglu, 20, entered pleas of guilty in the County Court on Wednesday to two charges of rape, and one of attempted rape, unlawful imprisonment and intentionally causing injury.

The sexual assault took place on April 18, 2020 after Balcioglu followed his victim from Broadmeadows railway station before he attacked her and fled the scene.

He was arrested the next day.

He initially appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via videolink from custody and his lawyer requested the case be adjourned to allow a report to be authored on Balcioglu’s fitness to plead.Balcioglu entered pleas of guilty during a brief appearance in court with the assistance of an interpreter.

He was remanded back in custody for a plea hearing on March 21, 2024.
