A young man who stole a ute and a motorcycle then led police on a dangerous chase in Echuca, a court has heard
Shiloh Weston appeared for sentencing in the County Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to two charges of theft, one of recklessly engaging in conduct endangering persons, another of recklessly engaging in conduct endangering life, and driving a motor vehicle while exceeding prescribed concentration of a drug.
Weston secured work with a concreter November 2022 but was arrested in December.
Judge Michael Cahill said on the morning of December 3, 2022 a police officer went to attend a report of a stolen Nissan ute at an address in Echuca in an unmarked cop car.
The ute was parked in the driveway and a stolen motorcycle was in the tray of the Nissan. Weston, who has an intellectual disability, was in the driver’s seat of the ute. The police officer blocked his way out by parking across the driveway.
After unsuccessfully driving around the cop car, he then reversed into its passenger’s side door in an attempt to push it out of the way. When he failed, he crashed through the property’s front brick fence and drove off.
Judge Cahill said coincidentally, a police air wing was in the area and filmed Weston’s movements. He drove over a median strip and headed west before getting on to the Northern Highway.
He drove on the wrong lane for several hundred metres and into the path of oncoming motorists who swerved to avoid a collision.
Police stopped the pursuit. Weston drove to a Montgomery St address, parked the stolen ute on the driveway and ran off. Police found him hiding behind a small shed nearby. A small snap seal bag containing methylamphetamine was found in his wallet.
Weston was jailed for two years and three months with a minimum of one year and six months.
