A hot-headed truckie who mistook a polite wave as a rude hand gesture and smashed his fist through a driver’s window has been given a slap on the wrist.

Stephen Hopmans was driving along Marlin Crescent in Point Cook, when another truck driver, who was trying to reverse into a driveway, waved at him to pass.

Mistaking the gesture as road rage, a fiery Mr Hopmans approached the driver, punching his window and causing $250 worth of damage.

Mr Hopmans yesterday pleaded guilty in the Werribee Magistrates’ Court over the incident on November 15 last year.

Magistrate Richard Pithouse called out Mr Hopmans’ “hot temper”, noting the truckie had been in trouble with the law for his anger issues at least twice in the past five years.

“It looks like you’ve got a bit of a hot temper,” he said.

“You might want to think twice (about losing it) over the next six months.”

After a car accident: your rights & rules

Mr Hopmans was placed on a good behaviour bond for six months, without conviction, and ordered to pay $500 to the court fund.

“You must be of good behaviour — no misunderstanding gestures between truckies,” Mr Pithouse said.

“You are running out of lives.”
