The couple, aged in their 70s, were walking two-year-old Australian terrier Hazel on Sanderling St in November last year when a staffordshire terrier-cross escaped its yard and charged at them, sinking its teeth into Hazel’s leg.
As the woman tried to scoop up the pup, her husband started hitting the staffy with an umbrella in a bid to fend off the attack.
Vet treatment for the deep wounds in Hazel’s groin and hind legs cost nearly $2000, with the couple left $451.30 out of pocket after making a claim on their pet insurance.
Missy, the unregistered staffy, was seized from a property in Magpie Court and taken to the pound.
Owner, Roger Graham, told the Werribee Magistrates’ Court Missy had not previously shown signs of aggression.
“It’s the first time there has been an incident — I don’t know why it happened,” he said.
Magistrate Therese McCarthy placed Mr Graham on an adjourned undertaking for 12 months.
He was also ordered to pay the couple’s out-of-pocket vet expenses and his dog’s lodging fees of $4575.
The council will decide whether to have Missy destroyed or declared a dangerous dog at a later date.
