But the opposition have today promised $3 million for projects aimed at cleaning up the Werribee River, including upgrading litter traps and stormwater treatment drains, if they win next month’s election.
Lalor federal Labor MP Joanne Ryan said litter was a “constant challenge”.
“Despite tireless efforts of local volunteers to clean up the river, more needs to be done,” she said.
“I grew up on the Werribee River and it is still my favourite place to go and enjoy.
“We need to invest in a healthy future for our local waterways to ensure that the next generation can enjoy the Werribee River like I have been able to throughout my life.”
The money is part of a $200 million Labor pledge to boost the health of urban waterways.
Opposition environment spokesman Tony Burke said the Urban Rivers and Corridors Program would provide grant funding for projects including revegetation, citizen science and education programs and tree planting across the country.
If elected, Labor will work with Wyndham Council and community groups such as the Werribee River Association to help protect the river.
