A 52-year-old Yarraville cyclist has died in hospital hours after he was hit by a car in Spotswood on Sunday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Douglas Parade about 2.10pm following reports a car mounted the curb, striking a cyclist near the intersection of Sun Avenue.
The Yarraville man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but tragically succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
A Victoria Police spokesman said it was believed two vehicles were involved in the incident along the popular cycling route, stressing the investigation was ongoing.
“Detective from Major Collision Investigation Unit are on scene and are trying to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash,” he said.
“Anyone who witnessed the crash or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.”
Assistant Commissioner for road policing Glenn Weir on Monday said Victoria had suffered a “traumatic” weekend with five people dying on Victorian roads.
“It’s been a horror weekend on Victorian roads there’s no getting away from it, we’ve lost a number of lives across a whole range of different circumstances,” he said.
“Each one of these incidents is a result of someone doing something, or not doing something, and taking a significant risk. Its all avoidable.”
Avid cyclist and Federal MP Tim watts shared his disbelief on social media, saying cyclists across Melbourne’s west are shocked at this tragic death.
“Like many in our community I ride on this road every day and share this mix of sadness, anxiety and frustration myself,” he wrote.
“Everyone is entitled to be and feel safe on our roads... I will be seeking briefings from the relevant authorities on the circumstances of this incident and what could be done to prevent similar incidents in future.”
