Controversial Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan has been slammed on social media for a “disgusting” and “insensitive” photo of him posing next to dead animals.

The photo, which was posted to Cr Khan’s personal Twitter account but has since been removed, depicted him grinning while posing next to two dead foxes.

The photo was captioned: “Day out at the Khan Farm.”

Hoppers Crossing’s Sandie Hillard shared the post on a Wyndham community Facebook group and told the Leader the photo was “inappropriate”.

Public figures, including Wyndham Council representatives, needed to be mindful of the content they shared with their large online audiences in case it offended some people, she said.

“I just think it was in really poor taste, especially from a sitting councillor looking to get re-elected,” she said.

“I think an elected official should be very conscious of his behaviour across the board.”

Facebook users were quick to share their revulsion for the “creepy” photo.

One woman wrote it was “repugnant and distressing”, while another woman wrote Cr Khan’s “smirk” showed “no respect for life”.

“This is a disgusting photo, putting a dead animal hanging upside down and with a smirk on the face. It’s even painful to see it. No respect for life,” the woman wrote.

Some pointed out foxes were pests and a threat to wildlife, but they too agreed the photo was “out of touch”.

It’s not the first time the embattled Harrison Ward councillor has courted controversy since he was first elected to serve on the council in 2012.

In 2018 Cr Khan was convicted at the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on charges of failing to disclose companies in which he had a financial interest, failing to disclose companies in which he held office during a return period, and failing to submit ordinary returns.

He was fined $26,000 and ordered to pay $15,000 costs.

Chief municipal inspector David Wolf of the Local Government Inspectorate said at the time the case highlighted the need for councillors to “act with transparency and integrity”.

But the fine would have been small change to Cr Khan, who is building a sprawling multi= million dollar property in Tarneit.

Cr Khan touts himself as a property developer and education entrepreneur on his website, who made his riches when he established the Western Institute of Technology, which now boasts campuses across the state and in Sydney.

He also purchased land in Caroline Springs in 2012 which he later sold for almost $12 million, sparking his lucrative foray into property investment.

Cr Khan listed four housing developments in Melbourne’s west on the market last year, for which he was expected to reap almost $60 million.

Earlier this month Essendon footballer Andrew Welsh paid Cr Khan $23 million for 32ha of land at one of the sites in Thornhill Park in the city’s outer west.

Speaking to the Leader on Wednesday, Cr Khan said he didn’t mean to offend anyone with his tweet and promised to immediately remove the photo.

Cr Khan said he was an animal lover and the photo was meant to convey the message that animal cruelty was wrong.

“Somebody has killed it and it was there and my son has taken a photo,” Cr Khan said.

“I saw the terrible thing somebody has killed the fox. I put it on as people shouldn’t be killing animals.” Cr Khan also denied he was smiling in the photo.
