A methed-up tow truck driver caught speeding with fake number plates purchased at the markets will have to switch professions for a little while.
Wissam Khodr pleaded guilty in Sunshine Magistrates’ Court last week to drug driving, speeding, displaying false plates, and driving unregistered.
The 48-year-old came to police’s attention when they saw him racing at 108km/h in an 80km/h section of Boundary Rd on September 22 last year.
Once intercepted, police conducted checks on the vehicle and discovered it had been unregistered since January 2023 and was displaying fake “home made number plates”.
Khodr told police he had purchased the number plates from the Laverton Markets and fitted them to the vehicle himself.
A drug test showed he had meth and cannabis in his system.
Khodr represented himself in court and said someone told him to use the fake plates but he “should not have listened”.
Magistrate Gregory Robinson said it was “inexplicable” that a professional driver would have repeated court appearances for offending on the road.
Mr Robinson said the punishment would “no doubt have an impact” on his career and capacity to earn money so he would reduce the financial penalty.
Khodr’s licence was cancelled for 12 months and he was fined $1500.
A conviction was recorded.
