HIGH fences were no match for the 100km/h wind gusts ripping through Boral’s Western Landfill in Ravenhall yesterday.
Boral Waste Solutions general manager Richard McCarthy said strong winds damaged some fencing and some mobile litter nets around the tip face, allowing material to escape along the eastern boundary of the landfill site.
He said the boundary fences remained intact and continued to contain the majority of litter on site, but Boral took full responsibility for cleaning up litter.
“We will be deploying our team of litter pickers into neighbouring areas with owners’ permission once it is safe to do so.”
Boral has also self-reported the litter escape to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and Melton Council.
“We are also taking a number of steps to reduce the impact these severe weather conditions are having on ongoing site operations,” Mr McCarthy said.
