Werribee’s Uncle Leo’s and Yarraville’s Pizza D’Asporto joint winners of Leader’s poll

The best pizza shops in Melbourne’s west according to Leader readers have been revealed — and it's a two-way tie at the top.

A Werribee institution and a trendy Yarraville joint have been rewarded by pizza lovers in Melbourne’s west for their top food and friendly atmosphere.

Uncle Leo’s Pizzeria in Werribee and Yarraville’s Pizza D’Asporto were voted joint winners in Leader’s poll to find the best pizza in the Wyndham and Maribyrnong areas.

Pizza D’Asporto has its original restaurant in Williamstown and it opened its Yarraville venue on Ballarat Rd four years ago.

Yarraville manager Anthony, who didn’t give his surname, said the staff focused on making all diners feel like they were part of a family.

“We just try to give everyone the family feel that our Nonna taught us to make,” he said.

“The quality of our ingredients sets us apart … and we’re stoked to win and glad everyone likes our food.”

Anthony said two of its most popular pizzas included the Salsiccia Porcini with pork, sausage and mushroom, and the San Danielle with prosciutto, mozzarella, buffalo and rocket.

Meanwhile, Uncle Leo’s has been part of Werribee’s fabric since owner Gino Pirrone opened the store in Werribee 27 years ago.

His brother, Aldo, also works at the restaurant and said its Gino’s Special and Afterburner pizzas were particularly popular.

Aldo said it was not uncommon to have diners up and dancing during their meals, and the store prided itself on its fresh ingredients and homemade sauces.

“It’s like you’re sitting down in Italy, a beautiful cozy little place and we’ve had people from all over the state here,” he said.

“Everything is done during the day, all the ingredients is fresh, we make our own sauces and do our own thing,”
