Wild footage has captured a power feeder explosion that lit up the night sky across Melbourne’s west as a grim discovery revealed the cause of the blast.
A video began to circulate on social media late Monday night that captured a power feeder explode in the inner-west suburb of Yarraville.
There were sporadic power outages in Yarraville, Footscray and Spotswood about 10pm with at least 3500 customers losing power for a short time.
A spokesman for energy company Jemena told the Herald Sun that a possum had got itself caught up in power infrastructure, causing the explosion.
The spokesman said the animal had got into the cross arms of a power feeder before the explosion.
He said half of their customers had their power restored within three minutes and the other half had power within 90 minutes.
A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesman confirmed crews were called to the scene but said it was a false alarm.
It comes as the nation’s energy market operator warns Victoria faces a heightened risk of electricity blackouts this summer amid major delays in rolling out new transmission lines and renewable projects.
